Why Lifting Straps Matter

Grip strength is often the limiting factor on heavy deadlifts, rows, and pulldowns. Your back and legs can pull more weight than your hands can hold. Lifting straps bridge this gap by securing the bar to your wrists, allowing you to train the target muscles without grip fatigue. They are not a crutch โ€” they are a tool used by every elite powerlifter, bodybuilder, and strongman.

How to Use Lifting Straps

1. Thread the Strap

Pass the end of the strap through the loop to create a circle. Place your wrist through the circle. Tighten so the strap sits snugly at the base of your wrist, not on your hand.

2. Position the Strap

The strap should hang from the inside of your wrist, pointing toward your fingers. When you grip the bar, the strap goes under the bar and wraps around it in the opposite direction of your grip.

3. Wrap the Bar

Grip the bar with your hand, then wrap the strap around the bar 2-3 times in the direction opposite to your grip rotation. The strap should be tight against the bar with no slack.

4. Secure and Pull

Squeeze your hand around the wrapped strap and bar. The harder you grip, the tighter the strap locks. When you pull, the strap cinches down and locks the bar to your wrist.

5. Release

To release, simply open your hand. The strap loosens and you can unwrap it from the bar. With loop straps, you can keep them on your wrists between sets. With figure-8 straps, you must fully unthread to release.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do lifting straps weaken your grip?

No, if used correctly. Use straps only for heavy working sets (85%+ 1RM). Do your warm-up sets without straps to build grip strength. Add dedicated grip work (farmer walks, dead hangs, plate pinches) 1-2x per week. This approach builds grip while allowing you to train heavy.

Are lifting straps allowed in powerlifting?

No. Raw powerlifting federations (USAPL, USPA, RPS) do not allow lifting straps in competition. However, you can and should use straps in training for heavy deadlifts above 85% 1RM. Train with straps, compete without them.

What is the difference between loop straps and figure-8 straps?

Loop straps (lasso) wrap around the bar and can be released by opening your hand. Figure-8 straps thread through themselves in a figure-8 pattern and cannot release until fully unthreaded. Figure-8 straps are more secure for max attempts but slower to put on. Loop straps are more versatile for general training.

Should beginners use lifting straps?

Generally no. Beginners should build base grip strength for the first 6-12 months without straps. Once you can deadlift 1.5x bodyweight without grip issues, start using straps for heavy sets above 85% 1RM. Using straps too early prevents grip development.

How long do lifting straps last?

Quality cotton straps last 1-3 years with regular use. Leather straps last 3-5 years. Signs of wear include fraying, thinning, or tearing at the loop. Replace straps immediately if you see significant fraying โ€” a strap breaking during a heavy deadlift is dangerous.
